Acer Iconia Tab A510 Now in Canada


Acer's Iconia Tab A510 has been selling in the US for a while now, but availability in Canada took longer to ramp up.

Now, though, the slate is finally up for order there, at a price of $449.99.

For the sake of comparison, the same item is listed, in Europe, for 399 Euro.

Alas, Future Shop (where the slate went on sale not long ago) labels the Iconia Tab A510 “temporarily as out of stock,” although five still seem to be up for grabs somehow, somewhere.

As a nice perk, the Tegra 3-based 10.1-inch mobile consumer electronics device with 32 GB of storage is already loaded with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It saves people the trouble of having to download a special app to get the update running.

LG enters the cloud storage arena, connecting your Android device to your LG Smart TV


LG Cloud

LG clearly doesn't think we have too much choice in cloud storage, as the company has launched the imaginatively titled LG Cloud. The stand out feature on this one though, is that the service integrates with your LG Smart TV.

Out of the box, free storage is a pretty standard 5GB, although naturally LG owners are favorably advantaged. LG Android phone and LG Smart TV owners get 50GB for free, albeit only for the first six months.

By now though, cloud storage is becoming a little -- read a lot -- boring, and plentiful. We're waiting for Google Drive to become the something spec ial we all expect a Google product to become, and Dropbox has long been the standard. LG Cloud stands apart with its integration between devices, be it a smartphone or tablet, desktop Windows PC -- Mac OS X isn't yet supported -- or LG Smart TV.

The service supports real time transcoding technology which will optimize video content for the different sized screens you could be watching it on. You can also watch a movie on your TV, stop mid-way through, and pick it up where you left off on your Android smartphone. Or, the other way round if you prefer.

As with Dropbox, LG Cloud has its own auto-upload feature. Photos and videos taken on your phone can be automatically synced to your LG Cloud account. Then you can go look at them on your TV, figures.

All in, it sounds like a pretty decent service. The drawback is the LG-exclusive nature of it all if you want to get the absolute best from the service. It isn't uncommon of course, Apple has their iCloud for example, but LG isn't Apple. Samsung are of course rumored to be heading down a similar path, should the mythical S-Cloud be announced this week in London. But LG aren't Samsung either. It's a bold move, and only time will tell how it pays off. But, personally, I have an HTC phone, a Samsung TV and probably an ASUS tablet in the not too distant future. I want something that will work on all of them, I don't want to have to go all in on one OEM's ecosystem of products to use services like this. I would guess a lot of you feel the same. We can all dream I guess.

In any case, you don't needan LG device to take advantage of the free 5GBcloud locker. If you're keen, you'll find the download links after the break. One final word though, at the moment you have to be in the US or South Korea. Other markets will be coming soon though apparently.

HTC to implement "small changes" to prevent future problems

HTC has issued an official response to the recent reports that some black One S phones, which feature a micro-arc oxidation coating, have been experiencing issues with the ceramic coating chipping off the chassis. Following on from yesterday's statement acknowledging the problem, HTC today restates its commitment to the MAO coating, which it says is proven to be of similar hardness to ceramic. The manufacturer adds that customers affected by severe chipping can return the phone to the place of purchase, or have the phone fixed under warranty.

The full statement, sent to ?The Verge, reads --

HTC is committed to delivering a high quality product and great experience for all our customers. There have been a few, isolated reports of this issue. The finish on the One S was laboratory tested as being at a hardness similar to ceramic. While that's hard, it doesn't mean it's impossible to damage. Regardless, HTC takes quality very seriously and are providing all customers with an immediate fix and we are implementing some small changes to ensure customers do not experience this issue in the future.

So that's that. Anyone suffering with unsightly scratches and chips can get a replacement, and hopefully the changes brought in by HTC will prevent any future occurrences.

New Material Produces Lasers in 3 Colors


Using a wet chemistry process, a collaboration of experts in the United States is now able to manufacture nanometer-sized semiconductor particles called colloidal quantum dots. These nanoscale structures can produce either red, green or blue light.

This is a remarkable achievement, primarily because lasers available for consumer electronics today are only capable of producing a single color. Therefore, you need to have three lasers side-by-side, each with its unique makeup and constituent material, in order to form a single pixel.

What experts from the Brown University and QD Vision, Inc. demonstrated has never been proven before, and could signify an important step forward in designing new types of lasers and displays for various electronic equipment.

In essence, these colloidal quantum dots are nanocrystals featuring a cadmium-and-selenium-alloy inner core, and coated with sulfur alloy, zinc, cadmium, and proprietary organic molecular glue.

The team says that their devices have the same shape and the same basic components, regardless of what color they produce. The only factor that varies is size, but all quantum dots are shaped like pyramids.

“Today in order to create a laser display with arbitrary colors, from white to shades of pink or teal, you’d need these three separate material systems to come together in the form of thr ee distinct lasers that in no way shape or form would have anything in common,” Arto Nurmikko explains.

“Now enter a class of materials called semiconductor quantum dots,” says the expert, who holds an appointment as a professor of engineering at Brown. He is also the senior author of a new paper detailing the discovery, which appears in a recent issue of the top journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Lexington, Massachusetts-based QD Vision managed to develop a wet chemistry process that enables its chemists to control the size of the quantum dots with extreme precision. This is why the researchers are able to produce light of specific wavelengths by just varying the size of the nanoscale pyramids.

Quantum dots featuring 4.2-nanometer cores yield red light, green light is produced by 3.2 nanometer cores, and blue light by 2.5-nanometer cores. Intermediary sizes produced intermediary colors, too.

“We have m anaged to show that it’s possible to create not only light, but laser light. In principle, we now have some benefits: using the same chemistry for all colors, producing lasers in a very inexpensive way, relatively speaking, and the ability to apply them to all kinds of surfaces regardless of shape,” Nurmikko says.

“That makes possible all kinds of device configurations for the future,” he adds. The new work was sponsored by the US Department of Energy, the Air Force Office for Scientific Research, and the National Science Foundation.

Several Employees Knew About the Google Street View WiFi Public Data Snooping


Google's WiFi snooping scandal, if you can call it that, doesn't want to go away. Though the whole thing was revealed some two years ago, Google is still dealing with criticism, though it seems, at least in part, rightfully so.

The FCC concluded its investigation over the matter, the last government agency to look into the issue. It found that Google broke no laws via its actions, but it did fine the company $25,000 for interfering with the investigation, since the company refused to provide some information.

Still, you'd think that would be that, but the FCC report has now surfaced in its entirety, with only the names of the people involved redacted. Google itself released the document after the FCC concluded its investigation.

The document seems to back up Google's story, that a sole engineer was responsible for the mishap, but it also seems to deny it, depending on how you choose to view it.

The report shows that a single engineer, whose name was not unveiled, not even to the authorities, Google says that he invoked his 5th Amendment right, wrote the code that captured WiFi communications over open channels, i.e. from WiFi networks that did not use passwords, therefore no encryption.

That data is easily accessible to anyone willing t o build tools to receive and capture it.

This happened in 2006, way before StreetView was rolled out. This corroborates the idea that the code was part of an experimental project, as Google said initially. However, the code ended up being used in Street View.

A document revealing that the code collected payload data from WiFi networks was forwarded to the Street View team. However, most of the people interviewed by the FCC said they had no recollection of the document. One said he did remember it, but not the part about gathering public data.

A senior manager at the company said he approved the document without actually reading it. The entire code was reviewed by one engineer, but it was a quality review and he says he did not realize the code would collect public data.

Still, one email suggests that at least one senior manager of the Street View project talked to the engineer who wrote the code about the payload data. Th e engineer also intended to have his work reviewed for "privacy considerations," but that never happened.

Even with all of this, the FCC found that Google broke no law. And the document, along with everything that came before it, suggests that Google did not have any evil motivation or even any motivation to collect that data.

Evil it may not be, but there is some level of incompetence in all of this, Google seems like a company that didn't really know what it was doing and where people weren't really sure what everyone else is doing and why.

Still, all of this dates back six years ago, after it revealed the WiFi mishap, Google implemented a more thorough and obligatory privacy review of all of its products and stricter internal policies.
