Reminder: Win a tablet or smartphone with SwiftKey and Mobile Nations

Swiftkey Survey

Just a quick reminder, boys and girls, that you've got a little less than a week left to enter to win a device of your choice (up to $800 worth) just for taking a little survey from keyboard-maker Swiftkey.

Head over to swiftkey.net/survey to begin, complete the survey. If you're one of the lucky three (yes, three) winners, you could get your hands on your dream phone or tablet, even if it doesn't run Android. In fact, even if you don't currently own a device that supports their kick-ass keyboard, SwiftKey still wants to hear from you, and you could still be a winner.

The survey is open internationally for smartphone and tablet owners aged 18 and over, and it runs until midnight on Wednesday, June 6.  Be sure to check SwiftKey's site for the full terms and conditions.

Head over to SwiftKey's survey page to get started!

HTC One X camera challenge - can you see the difference between a smartphone and a camera?

AppId is over the quota

HTC camera challenge

HTC is pretty confident in the new camera they introduced in the One series. I have to be honest, they have good reason to be. The camera in the One S is downright spectacular, and really can replace a typical point-and-shoot digicam. It's a wonderful mix of hardware, software, and magic that truly delivers. In fact, HTC is pretty sure you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between pictures taken with the One X and those taken with a stand-alone camera. Hit the link below, run through and see what all the fuss is about.

LG reveals first Android smartphone with 2GB RAM

Today LG revealed the Optimus LTE2 which is the first smartphone to feature 2GB of RAM, double that of most high-end phones. LG obsesses with Samsung, the same way that Samsung obsesses with Apple, so it’s no surprise the Korean handset maker quietly announced a new smartphone in responses to Samsung’s Unpacked event.

Highlights of the Optimus LTE2 include a 4.7 inch True HD IPS display, dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB RAM, 2150 mAh battery, and support for LTE networks in Korea. The device is expected to go on sale in mid-May.

We don’t expect this exact model will ever come to the US, but it provides a good idea of where the high-end smartphones are headed. By the end of 2012, most flagship products will have quad-core processors, 2 GB RAM, and 2,000+ mAh batteries.

Thank you LG for making all our phones feel a little more inadequate.

JCB's ruggedized Android smartphone launches in the UK

JCB phone

British construction equipment manufacturer JCB is no stranger to the smartphone game, having worked with Motorola to launch the DEFY+ JCB Edition just a few months ago. And today sees the launch of JCB's own-brand Android handset, the JCB Toughphone Pro-Smart. It's not going to win any beauty contests, but JCB's going for ruggedness over looks with this device, which boasts IP67-rated water and dust-resistence, along with a basic Gingerbread-based software experience.

A glance down the spec sheet reveals some pretty basic internals -- you've got an 800MHz CPU, a 3.2-inch HVGA screen and a microSD card port. Interestingly there's a whopping 2000mAh battery packed inside this phone, which combined with its entry-level hardware, should deliver some impressive battery life.

British retailer Clove Technology is now stocking the JCB Toughphone Pro-Smart with a SIM-free price of £310.80 including VAT.

Watch Coachella's livestream this weekend on your Android-powered Google TV, tablet or smartphone!

Coachella

We can't all be at Coachella this weekend, which sucks. Hard. But that doesn't mean we're going to miss out on all the incredible music. Youtube again will be streaming more than 60 acts, and that's where Android comes in. Probably the best way to watch is going to be from Google TV on a big screen. But because we're talking Youtube, we'll also be able to watch on our smartphones. Or on our Android tablets. Or, we suppose, on a laptop.

It all starts this afternoon at 3:50 p.m. PDT (that's 6:50 p.m. on the east cost). Steer yourself over to the Coachella Youtube Channel for all the music. You're not going to want to miss this. Check out the trailer video after the break.

US Cellular releases its first LTE smartphone, the Galaxy S Aviator

US Cellular is one of the larger regional carriers in the US, and has a pretty solid nationwide coverage map. Recently, they have begun rolling out an LTE network, with the high-speed network reaching portions of Maine, Wisconsin, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Iowa. Before today, US Cellular only offered one LTE-capable device, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1“.

Starting today, US Cellular will begin selling their first LTE-capable Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator. Yes, you read that right; the Aviator is a variant of the original Galaxy S line, and not the more-powerful Galaxy S II series. Fortunately, the original Galaxy S is definitely one of the better older Android devices, and it will only set you back $99.99 after $100 mail-in-rebate Mastercard.

Full specs for the Galaxy S Aviator include:

AndroidTM 2.3 (Gingerbread)4.3? Super AMOLED™ Plus Screen1GHz Hummingbird Processor8 MP Camera with LED Flash1.3 MP Front-facing Camera1.4GB of Internal Memory

Though we’re certainly not blown away by a device with a single-core Hummingbird processor when quad-core Tegra 3 devices are starting to eek their way out, the Galaxy S Aviator provides a solid option for US Cellular customers who want to board the LTE train.

Any US Cellular customers out there? Plan on picking up the Galaxy S Aviator, or are you holding out for a slightly more powerful device?

Why do Verizon tablet users get free mobile hotspot while smartphone users don’t?

Verizon has just announced the new iPad data packages, boasting the fact that they include hotspot services at no additional cost. Big Red offers the same feature for tablets with other operating systems. The hotspot may be a great incentive to buy a tablet, but seems rather unfair for smartphone owners.

Verizon’s tablet data plans are the following:

1 GB for $20 (iPad only)2 GB for $305 GB for $5010 GB for $80

Never mind the fact that iPads get an extra package to choose from, smartphone owners are paying identical prices for their data, while Verizon requests that they pay an extra $20 fee for tethering (mobile hotspot). Granted, mobile hotspot users get an extra 2 GB of data, though the extra data doesn’t quite make this a fair deal. The fact remains that smartphone users have to pay more for what is essentially the same service.

If given mobile hotspot at no cost, smartphone subscribers would be using the same bandwidth as those tablets. Meaning maintenance costs would probably amount to the same.

On the bright side, tablet users will be much happier about this change, and could be the reason why Verizon has set data plans in this manner. Asking a customer to sign a 2-year contract for a tablet is not easy, as such devices are also much more expensive and usually considered luxury items. Customers are less likely to purchase a tablet at full price.

But people don’t mind signing up for a smartphone, with some considering it to be a necessity. It could be argued that customers would not want to buy a data-connected tablet if they offered free tethering for smartphones. Users would just get a WiFi device, instead, or simply go without.

Regardless, such tactics are unjust currently, though those shared family data plans might make everything much better. Users will be able to share data among a plethora of devices without spending much more.

For now, though, we would really appreciate some equality among different platforms and devices. If there is no need to charge tablet users for hotspot services, there should be no reason for smartphone users to pay up. Give it some thought and let us know what you think. Do you believe it is ok for Verizon treat tablets and smartphones differently?
