Restoring your Nexus 7 using Google Factory images -- a guide [from the forums]

Fastboot

So you bought a Nexus 7, partially because it's a Nexus device and you wanted to hack the living crap out of it. Cool -- me too. Whether you're just beginning, or an old pro you will need factory images to fix the things you've broken. But having them isn't enough, you'll need to know how to use them. It's one of those things that isn't hard, but when you're not used to doing this type of thing it's always nice to have a friend to guide you. AC Forums Adviser 2defmouze is that friend, and he's prepared everything you'll need to know about fixing your Nexus 7 once you've made it unbootable. And that is priceless. Hit the Nexus 7 forum link below and bookmark it right now, and be sure to give 2defmouze some love while you're at it.

The best part about having folks like 2defmouze and the rest of the great crew in the forums working on guides and how-tos is the level of support you'll get if you come across something you can't figure out on your own. We're picky here at AC, and we don't hand out Adviser badges to just anyone. You can trust these guys with your precious toys. That's why I'm always steering you guys there -- they are Android nerds to the core, and know their stuff.

HTC EVO 4G LTE

We know the EVO 4G LTE is running Android 4-dot ... something. But this was a first, at least for me. At least they didn't come at us with something like "That's for us to know and you to find out."

Dolphin Browser HD - Search the web and navigate the browser using Dolphin Sonar

Dolphin HD

The folks from MoboTap have now released the latest version of Dolphin Browser HD bumping it up to v7.4.0. Aside from the usual bug fixes typically inlcuded with all updates, this release actually introduces a new feature called Dolphin Sonar that allows you to issue voice commands to help navigate the web. Once installed, you can open up Dolphin, give your device a shake then tell it what you want to do.

"Our Gesture-based browsing function was a game-changer in terms of the way people browse on their mobile devices, and Sonar is the logical next step," said Yongzhi Yang, CEO of MoboTap, makers of Dolphin Browser. "Just as sonar is used by dolphins to navigate, Dolphin Sonar interprets sound to get you where you want to be online. We are continuously thinking of new ways to heighten our users' mobile browsing experience with new and innovative features."

Having given it a quick run through, it fairs quite well when issued commands. I'm not so sure I would use it all the time but I suppose that's the good thing about it -- you don't have to but in case you want to, it's there. You can find the full press release and download link past the break.

Dropbox v2.1 now available in the Android Market, automatically upload photos and videos using WiFi

Dropbox

Just in case you skipped out on testing the recent experimental builds of Dropbox from their users forums, you can now head on over to the Android Market and grab the official release. As noted in the change log, they've addressed some bugs from the beta and added some new features as well:

  • Allows you to automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan

  • Up to 3 GB of free space for uploading photos automatically (in 500 MB increments)

  • Upload files of any size

  • Various performance improvements & bug fixes

  • We now store your Dropbox credentials in Android’s secure Account Manager. This means Dropbox can’t be installed on your SD Card and requires the “Your Accounts” permissions. These permissions only allows us to access accounts we create.

If you're a Dropbox user and haven't grabbed the latest release, now is a good time to do so and take advantage of that free space they're offering. Download link is past that for you all.

How to Send SMS From a Web Server to an Android Phone Using Java

The Java "wireless.messaging" library provides Android developers with a method to send SMS messages using the Java language. An SMS message is a text-based message you send to another phone number. Text messaging is a basic service offered by wireless services. You must specify a phone number to send the message and the "sms://" protocol to trigger the right services on the Android device.

Difficulty:Moderate1

Open the Java Eclipse software development program on your desktop. Open the Android project in which you want to add an SMS module. Double-click the Java file you want to use to send the message.

2

Add the wireless messaging library to the top of the file. You need this library to call the necessary functions. Copy and paste the following import statement to the top of the file:

import javax.wireless.messaging.*;

3

Create a connection to the wireless phone number. The following code sets up a variable with the target phone number:

this.connection=(MessageConnection) Connector.open("sms://5555555555:2948");

The "2948" is the port number used to run the SMS service. Replace the "5555555555" with the mobile phone number you want as your recipient.

4

Set up the message content. The following code sets up a string variable with the content "Hello, Recipient" as the message:

String message ="Hello, Recipient";

5

Send the message. The following code packages the SMS message and sends it to your recipient phone number:

this.connection.send(message);
