Kindle fire grabs more than half of the Android Tablet market share us

Kindle Fire

The data published today by comScore show that the Amazon Kindle Fire collected more than 50 per cent of the Android Tablet market at the United States. With a share of 54.4% of February 2012, it is only at the head of the Pack by a comfortable margin, with second place, Samsung Galaxy Tab almost 40% 15.4% of the growth of the Android tablet market behind. While it might seem to be the bad news for Android OEMs, it is not a surprise for us.

Kindle Fire, as the leader of the entire Tablet market the iPad, has a big thing for it - an "ecosystem" unified content. We ' re advanced mainly users who read blogs and forums to learn the different ways to use our devices and associated stuff with, but for many they want just an easy way to purchase and consume content on their shelf. Amazon offering in a way that Google does not, at least for people in the United States.

We ' re think Google is designed to remedy this situation, at least in part, with the launch of the game Google store and a mystery tablet device any this summer. Google i/O will be an exciting time, that ' s for sure.

Android Market Developer Console adds new metrics to its Application Statistics

Android Developers

The Application Statistics dashboard within the Android Market's Developer Console has been upgraded with new functionality and a revamped UI in order to help developers better track their apps' performance. Previously, Applications Statistics showed developers where their app was being installed, by whom, and on which device. With the update, Application Statistics can now measure unique users as well as unique device models by tracking active installs, total installs, and daily installs and uninstalls. All data can now be broken down into stats for individual carriers as well.

Additional functionality includes the ability to track individual app versions, as well as an integrated timeline that plots the app's metrics since its arrival on the Market, allowing developers to see which promotional period, version update, or other factor contributed to a spike in installations. Along with the new features, the easier-to-manage UI improves usability and simplifies exporting data.

The Application Statistics update is now live in the Android Market Developer Console. Android Developers' official statement can be found at the source link.

OnLive Desktop arrives in the Android Market, aims to bring the power of a PC to your Android tablet

OnLive Destop

For a lot of folks, tablets are a great alternative to PC's but for some -- it's hard to complete some of the same actions as a PC on one. Looking to bridge that gap is OnLive with their new OnLive Desktop application. Using a cloud based PC you can connect to, you can now complete some of those tasks.

Features:

  • Instantly view, edit and create documents using actual Microsoft® Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Easily transfer files between OnLive Desktop and other devices

  • Experience high-performance, instant-response PC applications

  • Interact with lag-free animation and video

  • Works with most Bluetooth keyboards and mice (left-click only)

The OnLive Desktop app is available for free with the basic offerings or you can jump up to the paid OnLive Desktop Plus services for $4.99/mnth which allows for some advanced features such as accelerated browsing, full flash support and additional cloud storage for your files.

Something to note however, is the compatible devices. OnLive notes support for the Acer Iconia Tab A500, ASUS Eee TF101, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, and HTC Jetstream but I've had no luck getting it installed on my Mototola Xoom. You can try it yourself though, just jump past the break for the download link.

Chrome extension allows for downloading of Android apps from Market to desktop

APK download

For those who know their way around the insides of an Android smartphone, pulling the apps off the device in their .apk form is a pretty trivial exercise. (We showed you how to do it many moons ago.) Now, thanks to a clever developer and a Chrome extension, you can download Android apps to your computer straight from the Android Market -- no smartphone acting as a middle man.

The trick is to install redphx's APK Downloader Chrome extension, turn off SSL error notifications, and then set a cookie for your Android Market e-mail and device ID. (Which means you need to be giving that sort of info up to the dev's cookie.) From there, you go to an App in the Android Market, hit the icon that now appears in the Omnibar, and download away. We've tested it out, and things work as advertised.

All that said, we've got no idea how Google's going to feel about this, but we imagine the Android Market doesn't have this sort of download capability in the first place.

We've got some demo video after the break if you want to see what you're getting into.

Dropbox v2.1 now available in the Android Market, automatically upload photos and videos using WiFi

Dropbox

Just in case you skipped out on testing the recent experimental builds of Dropbox from their users forums, you can now head on over to the Android Market and grab the official release. As noted in the change log, they've addressed some bugs from the beta and added some new features as well:

  • Allows you to automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan

  • Up to 3 GB of free space for uploading photos automatically (in 500 MB increments)

  • Upload files of any size

  • Various performance improvements & bug fixes

  • We now store your Dropbox credentials in Android’s secure Account Manager. This means Dropbox can’t be installed on your SD Card and requires the “Your Accounts” permissions. These permissions only allows us to access accounts we create.

If you're a Dropbox user and haven't grabbed the latest release, now is a good time to do so and take advantage of that free space they're offering. Download link is past that for you all.

[Update x2: Modern Combat 3 On Sale Today] Gameloft Bringing In The New Year With A Bang, All Games Will Be On Sale For $0.99 In The Android Market 12/29 - 1/5

If your new year's resolution is to kill more time playing games on your Android device (that's mine, anyway), then Gameloft is all ready to give you the hookup beginning on December 29th, when all of their games will be dropped down to mere $0.99 in the Market. The one exclusion to this deal is Modern Combat 3 - it will, however, go on sale for one day (though they didn't mention the price).

2011-12-27 15h33_53

Gameloft has some pretty killer games, including titles like Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, N.O.V.A. 2 HD, 9MM HD, Order & Chaos Online, and more.

This deal will begin on Thursday, December 29th and run until January 5th, 2012.

Update 1/2: Modern Combat 3 is now $0.99, but there seems to be a glitch in the Market. If you search for Modern Combat 3, it shows the $0.99 price tag (and allows you to purchase it for that amount). However, once you click on the title, the price is $6.99. The aforementioned problem seems to be all good now. Hit the widget to buy! Thanks, Aki! Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation
