Samsung Galaxy S III anti-unboxing video [NSFW]

Unboxing videos are a dime a dozen. Ever single time a new product comes out, the Internet races to show you just what kind of cleaning cloth, USB charger and warranty manuals come included in the box of the gadget they’ve just bought. They are incredibly boring. A waste of YouTube space. And someone has [...]]]>

HTC One V video shows off unboxing and benchmark scores

The HTC One X and One S have been getting a lot of attention lately, but that doesn’t mean the entry-level HTC One V has been completely forgotten. Even though the HTC One V isn’t expected to go on sale in Europe for a few more weeks, that doesn’t mean we have to wait that long to get a closer look at the device.

Netbook news managed to buy the HTC One V in Taiwan, and were kind enough to share a pretty lengthy unboxing video which also covers a few benchmarks and shows the handset running some of the latest games featured on Google Play. The HTC One V may be running on a Snapdragon S2 SoC with the Adreno 205 GPU, but you’ll notice that the benchmark numbers and gaming performance is definitely a step or two ahead of last year’s phone running on the same chip. Combine the handset’s performance with HTC’s new ImageSense camera technology and a $325 price tag and you have the ingredients for an instant success.

We’re expecting several regional carriers in the U.S. market to sell the HTC One V within the next month or two. We don’t know what the handset’s final price will be on this side of the Atlantic, but the One V would be impossible to pass up if someone prices it at $300.

Is the HTC One V the right combination of value and performance with phones like the HTC One X on the market?

HTC One video overload: official commercial, One X stress test and hands-on overviews

The guys who brought up the HTC One X camera shootout have also uploaded a few hands-on videos of HTC’s new lineup, the official commercial for the HTC One X, and a stress test demonstration. We could go into detail and talk about the different videos, but it’s probably easier to let you sit back and watch them instead.

There’s been a little bit of HTC One overload today and we expect things to stay this way until after the launch of the HTC One series next week. As always, leave us a comment and let us know what you think of the videos. I was fascinated by the HTC One X camera shootout video, but it’s nice to know that the HTC One X can take a beating and still hold things together.

Stop everything, the One video you need to watch today

“Welcome to HTC One, a phone which was designed with the belief that no one person is the same as everyone else. We believe that one recommendation is a 1000x more powerful than ours, which is why we have always put that one person at the heart of everything we do.”

If you watch one video today, make it HTC’s new ad Welcome to HTC One. These guys are getting pretty good. What do you think of the HTC One launch campaign?

Hands-on video with root options in CyanogenMod 9

CM9 root

As you might've heard, popular custom ROM CyanogenMod 9 is introducing some changes in the way it handles root access. The gist of it is that root is now an option, not the default setting. It's still available if you need it, but you'll need to go into "developer options" and select whether you want apps, ADB or both to have root when you're done flashing your ROM.

As you'll see in our new video, if you try to run a root app without this setting enabled, you'll get a message directing you to the root setting. It's a bit like the "unknown sources" option that blocks non-Google Play apps by default -- enabled as standard for added security, but easy to bypass if you want.

We've got a quick video walkthrough after the jump.

Sony details Floating Touch technology in new video

Sony’s big announcement this week revolved around the Xperia Sola (previously known as “Pepper“). The device failed to impress us all that much, but Sony had a couple more tricks up its sleeve including SmartTags and a new technology they are calling Floating Touch. The latter raised some questions, which the Japanese manufacturer tries to explain in a recent blog post.

In a nutshell, Floating Touch allows users to control their device by hovering their finger over it. It is similar to how your cursor works on your desktop. When you hover over content it is highlighted, then you can make a selection by tapping. This will give users finer control and reduce the incidence of tapping on wrong buttons or links when using a supported app.

But how exactly are they able to accomplish this? The explanation may be a bit confusing, but let’s give it a try. Current smartphones use capacitive touchscreens. Manufacturers can use two types of sensors for such – mutual and self capacitance. The former allows multi-touch, while self capacitance sensors do not.

Sony uses both sensors simultaneously to create this hovering effect. Mutual capacitance is used for regular touch actions, and self capacitive sensors are activated when the Floating Touch feature is in use. This is what creates the “shadowing” effect (or highlighting).

The self capacitive sensors are set up to be extra sensitive, being able to detect a user’s finger up to 20 mm above the screen. When hovering one’s finger, the screen is not able to detect multiple fingers. This is not necessarily bad, as seeing multiple hover points on your screen would likely just be confusing.

As expected, this feature is not available for all applications. Developers will have to implement it in order for the customer to make use of it. But for now, you can use the Xperia Sola’s browser with Floating Touch capabilities.

I really want to get excited over this feature, but can’t help feeling like it is just a gimmick. But it seems fun, and it would help in some scenarios – especially for small devices, such as the 3.7-inch Xperia Sola. When using smaller smartphones, one tends to tap on the wrong links more often, due to the lack of screen real estate.

Personally, I am still more excited about SmartTags. Check out the video and source link for more details then let us know what you think of this technology. Do you think you could take advantage of Sony’s Floating Touch features?

Acer CloudMobile shows itself on video before MWC

We're almost there -- at MWC in Barcelona that is. But, as ever before we get to a big show the leaks continue to trickle out ahead of time. We're already expecting to see the Acer Cloud Mobile unveiled in Spain -- and naturally we'll be there to play with it if/when it appears.
Android Central at Mobile World Congress
The Italians are already one step ahead of the game though. At a recent press event in Milan, the guys from Celluare Magazine managed to get their hands on one. Better still they managed to shoot a quick hands on video with the device too. Before you click play though, remember that they're Italian. They're speaking Italian. But the video gives you a pretty good first look at the device. All in all, it doesn't look half bad.
Remember to keep it locked to Android Central over the course of the next week for all the best of the goings on from MWC.
