Google has been working hard over the past few years to make the Google Play Store as global as possible and now, they've announced the availability of some new areas and currencies that are supported:

  • Czech Republic

  • Israel

  • Poland

  • Mexico

Android developers in those countries can now submit and sell apps in any currency they wish and subsequently receive payouts and financial data for their work in their local currency. Amazon App Store v2.3.0

Although the last update to the Amazon App Store brought us all the ability to go ahead and disable notifications it really didn't work all that reliably. Amazon however has now jumped the version number up to 2.3.0 and aside from fixing the notification bugs, also went ahead and updated the 3G/4G download limit from 20MB to 50MB along with the usual stability enhancements. If you already have the Amazon App store installed, you can update from there otherwise hit the link below to grab it.

Dungeon Hunter 3 now free in Google Play Store

Dungeon Hunter 3 has been a long time coming, but Gameloft finally delivered the Android version to the Google Play store today. Like recent Gameloft releases, DH3 is a freemium title, which has its ups and downs. You can grab the game for free right now, but be prepared to receive a couple spam alerts in your notification bar to buy more Gameloft coins.

“Hero, you are needed in battle! This is your time to conquer! Evil has once again flooded over the sacred land of Gothicus. Face your destiny and enter the endless waltz of battle, victory and glory. 16 massive arenas are waiting for you now. Hero, this is your time to conquer!”

If you can put up with all the freemium annoyances, DH3 looks like an awesome followup to DH2. The latest adventure has 16 different arenas, each of which can be played at 5 different levels of difficulty, to provide an extended replay value. Players can choose from 4 new classes – Warlord, Astromancer, Trickster or Shaman – and unlock over 1,000 items.

I still enjoy all the Gameloft games, so I’m downloading this now. Let me know if you give it a try and please chime in about Gameloft’s freemium strategy.

HTC One hits store shelves a few days early in Germany

Even though HTC officially announced that the HTC One would be available starting on April 2nd that has not stopped electronics retailer Media Markt from putting the HTC One X, HTC One S and HTC One V on store shelves a few days early. Several shoppers have reported that the three HTC One devices are available at Media Markt stores in Germany, allowing customers to get an early taste of Android 4.0 with the latest version of HTC Sense.

The HTC One X and HTC One S are listed for €579 and €519. While the HTC One V is said to be available as well, no one took the time to remember the handset’s sale price.

If you live in Germany, we suggest you rush down to your local Media Markt. You’d be crazy to not want to test it out and get some hands-on time with HTC new flagship devices. If you do spend some time with the HTC One, don’t forget to leave a comment below to let us and the other readers know what you think of the device.

Getting Google Play store errors? You're not alone

Play store error

If you're having trouble accessing paid apps on your Google Play account, or seeing cryptic server errors when trying to browse for apps, you're not alone. We've been getting reports, some as old as three days ago about errors where paid apps aren't shown as purchased, both on the phone and on the web, as well as the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) error you see above.

We're pretty certain it's some sort of server glitch, and your paid apps are safe and sound in the Googleplex basement, but it sure is annoying -- I just got myself a Transformer Prime and want to set it up! We've pinged Google, and we'll let you know what they have to say when they get back with us.

Thanks, Johann!

Samsung launches 'store within a store' at leading Phones4U branch

Samsung

Remember that thing Samsung was meant to be doing at Phones4U on Oxford Street, London on March 30? Shockingly, it turns out it's not a Galaxy S III launch event, but instead the opening of a store within a store at the leading branch. What this means, according to Samsung, is that a large portion of the store will be dedicated to all things Samsung, with the latest phones and tablets on show, and "play areas" for prospective customers to try them out.

Samsung already operates "Samsung Digital Plaza" locations in South Korea, but this is the first we've heard of the manufacturer getting more involved in the retail world outside of its home turf. We're not expecting any new products to show up at Phones4U tomorrow. But the store's prime location in central London, combined with the new Samsung partnership, may make it an ideal spot for showing off upcoming Samsung phones in the future

We've got Samsung's press release after the break.

Android Hot Topics: Google Play Store, HTC One X release date, Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6

We post several hundred Android related blog posts every month, but the reality is that only a few stories generate the majority of the buzz. It is easy to pick out the trends each week to see what things people are searching for and which stories are getting the most engagement, so I figured we would start recapping the hottest topics every Wednesday. This week we explore the latest on Google’s new content store, HTC’s flagship device, and Samsung’s rumored next-gen tablet.

It was only announced one week ago, so it’s no surprise that the Google Play Store is one of the most searched terms on our site. The average Android user does not read the blogs on a daily basis, so a large amount of people were confused when Android Market started to disappear from devices and the Google Play Store took over.

Verizon must have received a lot of customer service calls about the issue, since they were forced to send out a text alert to their subscribers this week. The short message read, “Android Market is now Google Play” and provided users with a link to learn more.

In other Google Play Store news, it was revealed that Eric Chu was stepping away from overseeing Android’s app store to explore other options inside Google. Kim-mai Cutler of TechCrunch reports that the app store had been a “secondary priority” because Andy Rubin had been measuring the success of Android through total device activations and mobile search revenue.

Now Jamie Rosenberg will get increased oversight for apps and games inside the Google Play Store. He previously was the face of the Google Music launch and also worked with Andy Rubin at Danger Inc. as Vice President, Premium Services.

A surprising majority of developers I talk with are still unsatisfied with the speed of innovation with Google’s store, so hopefully all these changes will help improve that.

As the most popular phone of Mobile World Congress, everyone wants to know when the HTC One X will be released on their carrier. HTC already said the phone was coming to a record number of carriers around the globe sometime in Q2, but specific release dates have not been announced.

The One X appears to be coming to a number of European countries next month, according to expected ship dates of online pre-orders. Amazon UK and Handtec say the phone will ship April 5th, while MarcoPolo Shop says it could ship by April 2nd in Italy.

In the United States, only AT&T has announced they will carry the One X. HTC is said to be holding some kind of media event next month in New York, so we could learn the release date of the AT&T version soon.

The HTC One X is also rumored to be coming to Sprint and T-Mobile, but we likely won’t hear anything new until the CTIA Wireless show in May.

If you want the latest info on the HTC One X release date, HTC suggested signing up for HTC news on their official blog.

A mockup of the Galaxy Tab 11.6 from Tabtech.

At this point the Galaxy Tab 11.6 is nothing more than a rumor that goes back to last year. Jonathan Geller of BGR first reported on the device in December, then I saw a working prototype that matched a similar description with my own eyes at CES in January.

Based on what I saw behind closed doors at CES, I predicted the tablet would launch at Mobile World Congress, but I was wrong. Samsung has now publicly said their new strategy is to unveil devices “closer to commercial availability of the product,” so we could be waiting several more months.

Rumored specs of the Galaxy Tab 11.6 include:

11.6 inch display with 2560 x 1600 WXQGA resolution2 GHz Exynos 5250 (2x ARM Cortex-A15 CPUs, quad-core ARM Mali-T604 GPU)Android 4.x

Most recently Samsung said they had an “exciting special announcement” at SXSW which started up the Galaxy Tab 11.6 rumors again, but it turned out that Samsung just demoed Angry Birds Space on the Galaxy Note.

At this point, we have no idea when Samsung’s next-generation tablet will hit stores. The 2 GHz Exynos 5250 chip that is expected to power the Galaxy Tab 11.6 goes into mass production during Q2, so we might not see the rumored tablet until the second half of the year.

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G lands in some store March 21st, nationwide on the 28th

We knew that the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G would be released sometime in “late March,” but the exact date had remained a mystery until now. T-Mobile has just announced that this “blazing” device will be released nationwide on March 28th. This date follows a previous March 21st pre-release, in which only select stores will be carrying the smartphone.

The device won’t take your breath away, but it is a good upgrade for those that don’t mind a few downsides. For starters, the Blaze 4G won’t come with Android 4.0. It will be released with Android 2.3, only to be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich later on. And it happens to have a 3.97-inch display, which is a size many would believe to be too small amidst 4.3+” behemoths. Granted, it is a Super AMOLED display, so the nice colors might make up for it.

The device also sports a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, NFC, a 5 MP rear-facing camera (720p HD recording), a 1.3 MP front-facing camera. The Blaze 4G also supports T-Mobile’s  HSPA+42 support for faster data speeds. I see it like mid-end device with a high-end punch in some specs.

As we reported last month, the device will cost $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Of course, you will have to sign your wallet away for 2 years, though with T-Mobile being one of the lowest-cost carriers in the U.S., that should be too much of a problem. But if you are already at it, maybe you should check out this device. Honestly, I would throw in the extra $80 to get a Galaxy S II or an HTC Amaze 4G, but this device just might be the right one for you.

Are any of you thinking of signing up for this one?

Third-party store uploading Android apps to BlackBerry App World without developers permission?

Android Central

The long awaited OS 2.0 update for the BlackBerry Playbook brought with it a whole host of opportunities for new apps. Now that repackaged Android applications are compatible with the PlayBook, and being accepted into BlackBerry App World, some well known names are starting to appear in the listings.

One such name is Dolphin Browser HD. A highly respected Android replacement browser appearing on the BlackBerry Playbook. Impressive. Despite being a phone browser, Dolphin is absolutely superb on the PlayBook and many already prefer it to the stock browser. Quickly -- although not surprisingly -- it has become one of the top 25 free apps in the App World catalogue.

Everything is rosy then yes? Well, no, not quite. The submission to App World wasn't made by MoboTap, the developers of Dolphin. The submission was made by Handster, a third party store owned by Opera. Someone else doing the work on the behalf of the developers -- a win surely? Turns out MoboTap were blissfully unaware that Handster had repackaged and submitted Dolphin to the App World for approval. Handster had already put out a statement prior to the OS 2.0 launch that they were to be uploading apps on behalf of developers.

A spokesman for MoboTap told Engadget that; "We do not condone Handster submitting our Dolphin Browser app to BlackBerry's App World for us and are currently working to take it down and assure Handster will not submit our app for us again. We will assess developing for BlackBerry when the time is right."

Even though Dolphin is a free application in the Android Market, the question still remains over why Handster are submitting an application to BlackBerry App World without permission. A quick search finds a pretty big selection of apps that Handster have submitted -- albeit a lot of them aren't that good -- including paid applications.

In any case, it seems that MoboTap are doing everything they can to remove Dolphin Browser HD from App World. Questions have been raised, but more importantly we're hoping that there aren't any Android developers being taken advantage of.
