NVIDIA claims mobile GPU performance to eclipse XBOX360 by 2014

NVIDIA has just unveiled a new slide that predicts GPU performance on mobile devices will catch or even surpass the graphical capabilities of the XBOX 360 by 2014. While this may sound like an amazing feat for mobile devices, let’s put things in perspective. The XBOX 360 is currently the most popular gaming console on the market, but it was introduced back in 2005, and it’s graphical performance reign was eclipsed just one year later with the introduction of the PS3. Both Microsoft and Sony are expected to introduce new console systems in the next 18-24 months, which would significantly increase their GPU performance.

We applaud NVIDIA for all the work they have done to deliver mobile GPUs that allow developers to create amazing games. Unfortunately, increased GPU performance will not mean a thing unless developers find a way to make mobile gaming as lucrative as console gaming (where consumers are willing to pay $60 for new releases). There are many great games on Android, but a quick glance at the top games listed in Google Play reveals that most consumers are not interested in playing graphic intensive games on their mobile devices.

If mobile GPU performance catches up with console gaming within the next few years, would you be willing to spend a little more money for games on your Android device? Or would you prefer spending $60 to enjoy a game on your 46-inch flat panel TV while sitting on your couch?

Android tablets running on Nvidia Tegra 3 to hit $200 this summer

The Nvidia Tegra 3 processor

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said in a recent interview that their recent cost reductions on the Tegra 3 processor will enable manufacturers to launch Android tablets with $199 pricetags, and that we'll see them as soon as this summer. As Huang explains, this can seriously lower the barrier for entry.

“We took out $150 in build materials, things like expensive memory. At $199, you can just about buy a tablet at a 7-Eleven.”

$200 is a sweet price point, as proven by the success of the Amazon Kindle Fire, and now others, like the ZTE Optik, are trying to follow up. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more decently powerful Android tablets that also happen to be reasonably priced, but maintaining quality at those lower tiers is going to be a challenge.

NVIDIA says 4-PLUS-1 is good for more than just games and extra battery life

NVIDIA has already established their Tegra processor as the leading platform for Android games with their Tegra Zone program, and now the company wants to let you know that apps can also benefit from their unique 4-PLUS-1 architecture.

Today NVIDIA posted a new blog that highlights several new apps which are designed to take advantage of their quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Some of the apps like Splashtop and Snapseed we got a preview of at CES, but this is the first time we have seen PowerDirector Mobile from Cyberlink.

I can say from personal experience that my Tegra 3-powered Transformer Prime offers the best Android experience of any device I have tried. It’s my favorite Android device to game on, but I have wished for more applications that really took advantage of it.

Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA CEO, recently said, “We need to develop the technology to inspire content developers and applications developers to create these amazing applications.” The competition has been arguing that mobile quad-core processors are overkill, so it’s nice to see some developers start to take advantage of all the power that Tegra 3 has to offer.

From what we have seen at recent shows, it appears that Tegra Zone will start to highlight some of these new apps instead of just focusing on games. We think it’s a good direction for them to go, since it’s not always obvious which apps are optimized for quad-core processors.

Check out the quick promo video below to see what developers are saying about working with Tegra 3.

New apps that benefit from Tegra 3 include:

Splashtop THD from Splashtop Inc. – allows you to seamlessly stream content from your desktop onto your Tegra 3 tablet. Whether you’re playing the latest FPS shooters or streaming high-res movies from your desktop to your Tegra 3 tablet, Splashtop’s remote desktop has got you covered wherever you go. Available now on Google Play. Available now on Google Play.Photaf THD Panorama Pro from Oren Bengigi – a new photo-stitching app that allows you to combine a sequence of photos to create a panoramic view of any scenery. This app accelerates image stitching time by using all four Tegra 3 processing cores. That means more time to create cool photos and less time waiting around. Available now on Google Play. Available now on Google Play.Snapseed from Nik Software – one of the easiest, most intuitive photo editors available for your Tegra 3 device. Take a picture, customize it to your liking and immediately send to friends and family. With Snapseed, you never knew your photos could look so professional, so quick and easy with your Tegra 3 mobile device. Coming to Google Play this summer.PowerDirector Mobile from CyberLink– this app was once a powerful desktop-based video editing tool. Thanks to the Tegra 3’s high-performance and battery-friendly 4-PLUS-1 architecture, PowerDirector Mobile will give you the power to manipulate and edit videos on your mobile device. Coming to Google Play this fall.

NVIDIA joins the Linux Foundation - here's what it means for Android (hint: Not a lot)

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

NVIDIA

The Linux Foundation has announced four new members this week, including the familiar face of NVIDIA. As most of us here know, Android is based on the Linux kernel, and NVIDIA has become a major hardware player on our phones and tablets. But what does this mean for Android users?

On the surface, it's excellent news. NVIDIA will invest money into advancing Linux, and by proxy, all open-source projects based on it. Linux has always been strong in the enterprise (some figures claim that over 60 percent of the servers on the Internet run Linux). However, its role in the desktop, and until recently mobile, has been much smaller. Because of this, and also to blame for this -- it's a Catch-22, is the relatively poor showing multimedia makes when talking Linux. This is where NVIDIA can make a difference. With its investment, other players may feel more compelled to develop for Linux and Linux-based projects like Android. We want more support from all hardware and software vendors, and getting a company like NVIDIA on board is a big step.

On the other hand, not much is really going to change for users like us. NVIDIA isn't likely to suddenly open-source its drivers for Tegra chipsets, or even offer more support than they do now.  hat they have done is show support for a cheap operating system that bridges their expensive hardware and their showcase software together. This makes sense from a business point of view -- make games that show off the power of your product, and invest time and money into the conduit that makes it possible.

In the end, this one doesn't really affect Android fans directly. Nothing we're concerned with will change, and NVIDIA has always shown support for Linux and Android without being an official Linux Foundation member. But it is nice seeing a company give a little back, and the folks behind the scenes building Linux will put it all to good use.

NVIDIA Tegra 3 Architecture To Be Called 4-PLUS-1

NVIDIA Tegra 3 Architecture To Be Called 4-PLUS-1

NVIDIA has officially coined a name for its unique quad-core architecture found in the Tegra 3 chip. It’s technology will be called the 4-PLUS-1 quad-core architecture and here’s the reasoning behind the naming choice:
“The more popular this technology became, the more our customers wanted a name for it that’s unique and descriptive. A name they could put on a box or a store sign that immediately represents its value”
If you stop and think about it, the 4-PLUS-1 name makes total sense. NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip will utilize 4 powerful CPU cores in order do tasks such as gaming, but then feature a 5th low-power battery-saver core to do smaller jobs like processing emails. NVIDIA also gave a subtle hint for its plans of the Tegra 3 processor and its architecture by mentioning this:
“Don’t be surprised to see it turning up more and more in devices at next week’s Mobile World Congress and beyond”
Will we see more Tegra 3 devices than we think at MWC next week and in the near-future? Stay tuned with Talk Android to find out!
