Google postpones Nexus Q launch, provides free units to the few people that pre-ordered

When Google placed the Nexus Q on sale last week, we joked that there would be no shortages because no one was going to order it. Several tech blogs reported that Google had sold out of the first batch of when the expected ship date was changed, but Google never released any details [...]]]>

Sprint's LTE network starting to fire up ahead of the official July 15 launch

Android Central

We already knew that the Sprint LTE network was due to fire up on July 15 in selected markets, but it seems as though it's already starting to be seen across those lucky cities.

According to various different reports in the Android Central forums, Sprint users are starting to see LTE data in cities slated for tomorrows turn on. We've got threads stating that LTE has been turned on in San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta, Kansas City and Houston, all the cities we were expecting to see fired up tomorrow.

If you're seeing LTE yourselves, why not let us know down in the comments below, or head on over to the Android Central forums and join in the discussion.

Fresh Galaxy Note 2 rumors suggest IFA launch, 5.5-inch screen

Android Central

The Samsung Galaxy Note is one of the surprise success stories of the past year, and as a successful product, it's no surprise to see rumors of successor circulating. The latest Galaxy Note 2 reports give some pause for thought, however. Korean news site MK says it's talked with "an official familiar with Samsung's product development," and is claiming to have details of the next Galaxy Note, including some tentative hardware specs, and news that it'll launch at this year's IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, Germany.

The IFA news isn't too surprising when you consider that's where the original Note made its debut in 2011. But the reported spec list makes for tantalizing reading -- a 5.5-inch screen, quad-core CPU and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean are all claimed for the Galaxy Note 2. And there's the suggestion that the camera may be upgraded to a 12 or 13MP unit, compared to the 8MP sensor in the original Note. Interestingly, Samsung's thinner, lighter Unbreakable Plane (UBP) display tech will apparently not be debuting in the next Galaxy Note, with the manufacturer instead opting to save it for the next major product, MK says.

If the Note 2 does launch at IFA, we can probably expect a Q4 international release, which would tie in with MK's? reports that the new phone-tablet hybrid will be positioned to compete against Apple's next iPhone.

Given the popularity of the original Note, a successor was always going to be on the cards, and everything MK? is reporting certainly sounds feasible. Whatever Samsung shows at IFA this August, we'll be there to bring you full, live coverage

Google: No Play Music, TV or Magazines for UK Nexus 7 at launch

Android Central

It's something that shouldn't come as a surprise, and something we commented on yesterday, but now we have official word from Google that the UK won't be getting Play Music, Magazines or TV shows in time for its Nexus 7 launch. Old Blighty, which has Play Books, Apps and Movies, has long been without streaming Music support (without proxy-based black magic, at least), and wasn't included in Google's initial roll-out of TV and Magazine services.

A Google spokesperson told The Inquirer, "The UK version will feature all of the options currently available in the UK Play store." That'll be apps, books and movies only, then.

Though we recently bemoaned the lack of certain Google Play services internationally, we were holding out hope that a last minute switch-on might coincide with the Nexus 7 launch, so it's disappointing that that's not the case. Nevertheless, the Nexus 7 is still great value at its £159 price point. If you're considering picking one up, let us know if the lack of some Google Play services has you thinking twice.

Official: Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G LTE to launch on May18th

The HTC EVO 4G LTE may not be the first LTE enabled device on Sprint’s network, but it will be the most powerful. The handset is powered by a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm processor and contains a 720p HD display,1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a dedicated ImageChip used for the 8MP rear camera and a 2,000 mAh battery. At launch, the HTC EVO 4G LTE will be the most powerful and feature-rich Android phone on the market.

While the phone may be amazing, it will not reach its full potential until Sprint’s LTE network rollout switches into high gear. So far, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Baltimore, Kansas City and San Antonio are the only markets with Sprint’s 4G LTE coverage. Major LTE expansion isn’t expected until 2013, so don’t expect to get much use out of that LTE modem until then.

Is the HTC EVO 4G LTE the perfect phone for you or will you wait to see what Sprint’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III will offer?

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), May 09, 2012 – Sprint (NYSE: S), the only national wireless carrier offering truly unlimited data for all phones while on the Sprint network1, and HTC, a global designer of smartphones, announce the Friday, May 18, availability of the next evolution of the award-winning HTC EVO™ family, HTC EVO™ 4G LTE.

It will cost $199.99 with a new line of service or eligible upgrade and two-year service agreement (excludes taxes). Pre-order began May 7 at www.sprint.com/evo4glte.

“HTC EVO 4G LTE sets the benchmark for Android devices this year with its incredible 4.7-inch screen, advanced camera features and future HD voice capabilities when combined with the speed of Sprint’s upcoming 4G LTE network,” said Fared Adib, vice president-Product Development, Sprint. “Its cutting-edge technology pairs perfectly with Sprint’s unlimited data plans to let our customers enjoy their wireless experience without worrying about overage charges or throttling.”

HTC EVO 4G LTE is built on Android™ 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, integrated with HTC Sense™ 4. It focuses on exceptional improvements in camera technology, audio and voice quality on both the network and device.

HTC ImageSense™ brings improvements to every part of the amazing camera experience featuring a superfast autofocus to enable continuous shooting, the ability to capture still images while taking video, and increasing the quality of photos taken in adverse conditions such as low light, no light or with bright backlighting.

HTC EVO 4G LTE is Sprint’s first device with HTC’s Authentic Sound experience integrating Beats Audio™. The technology enables customers to hear music the way the artist intended with unique audio tuning that delivers thundering bass, soaring midrange and crisp highs. Beats Audio is enabled across the entire phone experience, including playing music stored on the device, streaming from a favorite service, watching a movie or YouTube™ video, or playing the latest hot game.

HTC EVO 4G LTE boasts brilliant features, including a vibrant 4.7-inch HD display, future HD voice capabilities2, 2000mAh embedded battery and 8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing cameras. It is powered by the Snapdragon™ S4 processor by Qualcomm, delivering best-in-class performance and a power efficient platform for exceptionally long battery life. HTC EVO 4G LTE brings back the fan-favorite kickstand built into the smartphone’s refined, slim design.

“With the HTC EVO 4G LTE, we’re launching a true successor the original EVO, bringing a focus on innovation, design and industry-leading consumer experiences,” said Martin Fichter, vice president, product management, HTC America. “The millions of current and new EVO fans will appreciate our amazing camera that’s superfast, easy-to-use and takes video and photos at the same time as well as our enhanced audio experience that you need to hear to believe.”

Respected device critics are buzzing with excitement for HTC EVO 4G LTE. Here are a few of the praises that poured in when it was announced earlier this month:

“The HTC EVO 4G LTE is a good looking phone and will make fans of Sprint’s EVO line very, very happy. It packs every spec anyone could possibly ask for: dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 8-megapixel camera, 4.7-inch HD display, and the latest Android 4.0 operating system, enhanced by Sense 4.0. Oh, let’s not forget the kickstand!” – Eric Zeman, Phonescoop“The original superphone has been reborn.” – Mark Spoonauer, Laptop Magazine“As for first impressions, I was shocked when I finally got to hold an EVO 4G LTE. In the presentation videos the phone looked thick and bulky. In person, it’s anything but. It is thin, deceptively lightweight and absolutely beautiful.” – Gary Krakow, TheStreet.com“Yesterday Sprint and HTC made a joint announcement, unveiling the brand new EVO 4G LTE. It’s an impressive device. Thin, light, fast, powerful, the whole package.” – Steve Kovach, Business Insider

HTC EVO 4G LTE customers can enjoy an unlimited data experience with Sprint Everything Data plans. Sprint’s Everything Data plan with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM includes unlimited Web, texting and calling to and from any mobile in America while on the Sprint Network, starting at just $79.99 per month for smartphones – a savings of $40 per month versus Verizon’s comparable plan with unlimited talk, text and 2GB Web, or $10 per month savings versus Verizon’s 450-minute plan with unlimited text and 2GB Web (excludes taxes and surcharges).

HTC EVO 4G LTE is one of the first devices available with Sprint Professional Grade, a new designation for select smartphones that deliver enhanced security, device management and Exchange Active Sync capabilities to business users. As part of the HTC EVO 4G LTE launch, Sprint will be giving customers a chance to share their LOVE on Facebook. To learn how you could enter for the chance to win UNLIMITED LOVE, make sure to visit Sprint’s Facebook page on May 18 for details.

Sprint recently announced Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio are expected to have 4G LTE and enhanced 3G service in mid-year. Rogers preparing for launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S III

Remember a few days ago when an ad for Rogers popped up, seemingly to proclaim their version of the Samsung Galaxy S III would come with the Exynos processor and LTE? Well, we still don't have a definitive answer on whether or not the ad was accurate but we do know now that we're at least one step closer to finding out.

A news bulletin has been sent out to Rogers employee's letting them all know the obvious and confirmed -- the Samsung Galaxy S III is coming to Rogers very soon. Needless to say, we'll keep digging for clarification which shouldn't take too much longer now that Rogers is relaying information internally.

Flipboard comes to Android via the Galaxy S III, wider launch coming soon

I’m not ashamed to admit that I own an iPad to go along with the 3 Android tablets currently on my desk. There are just several applications available for the iPad that haven’t yet made their way to Android tablets, or (perhaps, worse) as scaled up Android phone applications that are not pleasant to use.

One application I use religiously to consume a multitude of content on the iPad. Flipboard presents a personalized magazine out of information being shared with you on RSS feeds and social networks, and presents it in a photo-centric way. Flipboard integrates with Pocket and Instapaper, applications that allow you to save stories for later consumption.

In short, I’ve been hoping for ages that Flipboard would be coming to Android, and it appears the wait will soon be over. The newly-unveiled Samsung Galaxy S III will have an exclusive Flipboard application for a period of time, and Flipboard will then travel to various Android devices after a few months. You can sign up to be notified of when Flipboard is fully-available for Android by visiting their website.

We’ll bring you the latest from Flipboard for Android as more information is unveiled. Stay tuned!

Official: AT&T’s HTC One X to launch on May 6th for $199 – pre-orders start April 22nd

AT&T has finally announced that the HTC One X will launch on May 6th with pre-orders kicking off on April 22nd. The price of the HTC One X is set at $199.99 with a two-year contract, matching Sprint’s asking price for the slightly better equipped HTC EVO 4G LTE. The press release does not mention what color options the HTC One X will be available in, but images on AT&T’s site show both the white and black versions of the device.

While AT&T is calling their phone the HTC One X, it is in fact the HTC One XL which features a dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor instead of the quad-core Tegra 3 chip used to power the international version of the One X. HTC has chosen to use the Qualcomm chip on HTC’s version of the One X since it features integrated LTE support, boosting battery efficiency.

Will you be pre-ordering the HTC One X on April 22nd or will you take your chances and head to an AT&T store on launch day to pick the phone up in person?

HTC One X is the first device from AT&T with HTC’s authentic sound experience featuring Beats by Dr. Dre Audio integration, offering rich, full sounds with professional-grade sound engineering to play the music how the artist intended. Beats Audio provides a distortion-free sound at higher volume and rich bass at all levels whether you are watching movies, playing games or streaming music. Superior Camera

For many consumers, their smartphone doubles as their camera. HTC One X’s 8MP HD camera features ImageSense and rivals traditional digital cameras with improvements to every part of the camera including the lens, sensor and software, while integrating HTC’s new ImageChip to make quality picture taking a breeze.

Fumbling with the menu and settings on your smartphone is frustrating when the perfect shot is right in front of you. Within seconds, you can launch the camera from the lock screen and the camera quickly autofocuses and zeros in on your subject. Zero shutter lag also lets you take continuous shots simply by holding the shutter button. HTC One X takes beautiful photos under low-light, no-light, and back-light conditions. The Video Pic feature allows the capture of still pictures while recording video in HD as well as the ability to capture a still image from previously recorded video.

The HTC One X’s next-generation 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ S4 dual-core processor allows customers to run heavy duty tasks such as creating and editing homemade videos smoothly without any lag, while the 1,800 mAh embedded battery, and software enhancements that improve battery performance by 50-100 percent over previous HTC phones, offers hours of uninterrupted entertainment time.

HTC Sense 4

HTC One X will be one of the first devices in the U.S. with the simple and intuitive HTC Sense 4 user experience. It helps make the Beats Audio experience possible while listening to any audio component and features camera enhancements including a quick launch feature for the camera on the HTC One X – dramatically cutting down the time needed to move from the lock screen to snapping a picture.

Xperia P and U pegged for early May launch in the UK

Xperia P

Hot on the heels of the Xperia S come Sony's mid-range and entry-level offerings, the Xperia P and Xperia U. We got to see both devices at the announcement event at Mobile World Congress a couple of months back, and if you're interested in picking either up, you should only have another 2-3 weeks left to wait.

UK retailer Clove Technology now lists both upcoming Xperia phones for pre-order, with an expected release date during the week commencing May 7. The Xperia P is available in black and silver, and will set you back £330 off-contract, the Xperia U comes in black and white, and sells for £204.

Pre-order pricing and release dates are always subject to change, but Clove has a proven track record when it comes to this sort of thing. And given the closeness of the purported release dates, we're inclined to believe them in this instance.

For more on the Xperia P and Xperia U, check out our hands-on coverage from MWC.

Motorola launch 3G versions of Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition in the UK

Android Central

The Motorola Xoom 2 has been with us in the UK for a few months now, albeit only in WiFi only flavor. Today though, Motorola has made available the 3G + WiFi variants of both the Xoom 2 and the smaller Xoom 2 Media Edition

Available online and in-store from the Carphone Warehouse from today, there has also been a small price cut on the WiFi only versions at that retailer. Prices now start from £299.99 for the Media Edition WiFi only. The 3G versions are priced at £399.99 for the Media Edition, and £449.99 for the 10.1-inch Xoom 2.

The Xoom 2 is still shipping with Android 3.2, which in this day and age could put some potential buyers off, especially when you consider the astronomical price tag. Nevertheless it's still a pretty solid tablet. If 3G is all you've been waiting on, then wait no longer.

Rumor: Best Buy email accidentally reveals AT&T HTC One X launch date

AT&T and HTC has been tight-lipped about the launch of the HTC One X, so Best Buy has taken matters into its own hands – revealing that the phone will be available on May 6. This new information comes from a Best Buy customer who pre-ordered the AT&T HTC One X at his local Best Buy store. The store did not reveal the handset’s launch date, but he did receive an email yesterday which claims that his pre-ordered HTC One X for AT&T would launch on May 6th.

The most curious part about the email states that May 6th is a new release date, indicating that AT&T may have had another date in mind. We’re not sure why the date has changed, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For all we know, AT&T pushed the launch date up by a week or two after news broke yesterday that T-Mobile USA would be launching the HTC One S on April 22nd.

Of course, there’s always the chance that the email is a fake or that AT&T will change the release date of the HTC One X again. we’ll just have to wait to see how this all plays out. If you don’t want to wait for AT&T to release the dual-core HTC One X with LTE, you can always buy the quad-core Tegra 3 powered HTC One X from Amazon or a few dozen other retails who are selling the phone. The official launch of the HTC One X in Europe is scheduled for April 2nd which means you could be installing all your favorite apps on an unlocked HTC One X by this time next week.

The Guardian launch their own Google TV application in beta

Android Central

Despite not being available yet in the UK, British newspaper The Guardian have gone ahead and developed a Google TV application currently in beta. Naturally it will only be available in the US on Google TV, but as it is accessed through the browser at gtv.guardiannews.com, desktop users can also take a peek.

Seems that The Guardian chose Google TV first because Chrome allows them to build an app quickly, and release new versions frequently. It seems the aim is to use the platform to develop a stable build, then port it to other Smart TV platforms, with an emphasis then on the UK platforms.

The UI looks pretty good, and there is a good range of content on offer in both written and video format. The Guardian are keen for people to test this out, and are listening to feedback to aid them in further development.

UK Xperia Arc S price plummets ahead of Xperia S launch

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Android Central

As Sony prepares to launch the first of its 2012 smartphones in the UK, one retailer has taken the initiative to offer the earlier Sony Ericsson flagship at a significantly reduced price. Right now British online store Dialaphone will sell you an Xperia Arc S for £199.89 off-contract -- a good deal less than the £350+ you'd have paid in late 2011. The offer applies to PAYG Arc S models locked to O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile or Orange, assuming you purchase a £10 top-up with either network at the same time.

As we discussed last year, the phone packs a pretty comprehensive feature set, including an excellent EXMOR R camera, in a slim, stylish chassis. It's also due an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the weeks ahead, which should give it a new lease of life. For more on the Arc S, check out our exhaustive review. Or if you're wondering what's next from Sony, you'll want to take a look over our initial review of the Xperia S.
